Techniques used: graphite sketching, various ink markmaking
Pictured above is the original version of this piece. It was created as part of my concentration in AP Studio Art during senior year of high school. Not satisfied with leaving this one in the past, I decided to redraw it four years later.
Originally, this piece took around 45 hours to create. I had one week to create the first, so I tried holding myself to the same schedule the second time. I ended up finishing it in about two thirds of the time; although I attribute most of this to copying an existing composition.
A good chunk of that time was spent looking at the original and thinking “why did I do that that way?” It made me realize how much I’d learned about this style of drawing the past four years.
Although I tried to keep both pieces as similar as possible, I did end up using slightly different medias. The original was 8x10”, micron pen, and pan pastel. The redraw remianed the same size and I used the same type of pen, I opted for copic marker over pan pastel. Pan pastel has the unfortunate quality of being messy and limited in color while the markers allowed more control over color and an overall cleaner application.
