Tossing aside “should” for “could”
Techniques used: patternmaking, acrylyc painting, machine sewing, hand sewing
It all started as a joke. I was writing my first Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I thought it would be funny for my players to encounter a long furby like the ones floating around on Tumblr. Then, on a whim, I bought an original furby from 1999. I considered just how difficult it could be to make one of these things - minus the mechanical parts. I measured the body and ears on the original furby and sketched a rough pattern for a long version. I finally ordered a paintable faceplate and made my way to the fabric store.
I decided to go with pastel colors to contrast the horrifying thing they would be applied to. Eunice began as a long tube of faux fur with a CNC machine coolant tube as a spine - this would allow her to be poseable.
Adding the stuffing was a unique challenge. I used a bo staff to get the stuffing to the head as my arm didn’t fit inside the tube of fabric and nightmares I had created. Once I had handstiched her arms and ears to her body, Eunice was ready to be released into my parent’s house and horrify all those she meets.
